Cities and Urban Water Leakage

A study prepared for the 3GF, urban water management has been identified as an area in which Public-Private Partnerships have significant potential to accelerate resource efficiency and economic growth.

The City of Copenhagen and the Danish Ministry of Environment are in collaboration pursuing the significant potential of Public-Private Partnerships to accelerate resource efficiency and economic growth.

The technical focus area of the project is Non-Revenue Water (NRW), but the benefits will include energy savings, improved drinking water safety, a more stable water supply as regards pressure and flow among consumers. Some of the measures will include collection and systematization of data, modeling of data, monitoring, etc.

The partnership objective is to demonstrate Global Best Practice on Urban Water leakage in selected cities to lay the foundation for a generic model for transferring the solutions between cities. The engagement of C40 should be one way to leverage this model.

The intention is to integrate the project into Copenhagen’s work with the C40 Green Growth Network as well as the bilateral work of the Danish Ministry of Environment.

The session at the 3GF will be guided by the following questions:

  • What are the drivers and obstacles for confronting urban water leakage?
  • How can reduction of urban water leakage be a good business case for private companies?
  • How can the initiative be leveraged globally?
